What to Expect

Your first appointment is very comprehensive. For scheduling purposes please allow 2 hours in your day for this first appointment. You should expect to leave your treatment feeling relaxed, well listened to, and different than when you arrived. During your first visit, we will go over your complete medical history and we will discuss the specific health concern that made you call an acupuncturist. Getting all the information about your injury, sickness, or disease is essential to your case so that an individual treatment plan can be established for your acupuncture care. I am very careful to listen to your doctor’s information and test results as well as the information you tell me. We will discuss other symptoms and tendencies you witness that you might not think relevant. You will have plenty of time and opportunity to ask questions. If desired, I will explain the acupuncture treatment to you before we start the acupuncture session. I will also assess your pulse and look at your tongue. These two observable TCM diagnostic methods allow an acupuncturist to listen to and see some internal conditions that are presently occurring in your body. Your tongue and pulse guide the practitioner to make changes at each consecutive treatment as well. Historically tongue and pulse diagnosis have been used by Traditional Chinese Medicine physicians for hundreds of centuries. There are thousands of well preserved medical texts and treaties written about these unique TCM diagnostic tools which we follow today in clinic.

Subsequent visits will run approximately 50 to 60 minutes and will consist of a short review of symptoms after the prior acupuncture treatment, progress since receiving acupuncture, and present symptoms you are witnessing. Time for review, questions, and other medical findings/coordination, reporting will take place, followed by an acupuncture treatment.

In addition to your acupuncture treatment, your visits may include cupping, moxibustion and diet and food therapy. A course of treatment depends on many variables such as the duration and severity of your complaint and your personal response to acupuncture.
